Setting expectations

In Matthew 5:1 I read:

When he saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.

His disciples came to him.

It’s unreasonable to expect people who are not Jesus’ disciples to practice The Sermon on the Mount.

But it is reasonable to expect that anyone who says they are a disciple of Jesus would apply The Sermon on the Mount.

As Jesus concludes his message in Matthew 7:7-27, he provides image after image to clarify and amplify his expectation that we put his words into practice.

It’s not enough to know God’s word. Jesus wants me to practice it with his disciples.
