Love builds up

We know that “we all have knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone thinks he knows anything, he does not yet know it as he ought to know it. But if anyone loves God, he is known by him. (1 Cor 8:1-3)

I have been struck by the reversal of knowledge here. It’s not our mind knowledge that grows us (it only puffs us up) but it’s God’s knowledge of us. Of course God already knows everything about us. Our loving him doesn’t increase his mind knowledge of us. Instead I think that the sort of knowledge that counts for something is the relational knowledge. As we grow in our love for God, our relationship with him deepens and he knows us as his own.
