Blasphemy against Holy Spirit

People say it’s denying Jesus and salvation. But the word says “but whoever speaks against Holy Spirit…”.

Clarify, I know what I believe but would like to know what others t h ink.

Hi @frank2, what about Peter? He denied Jesus three times in public. Was he unforgivable? The Scriptures make it clear - no, not at all. Jesus personally ensured that Peter knew he was forgiven.

Imagine if you’re at work and a friend tells you, “This company is a disaster. I hope it goes bankrupt.” Should they get fired? Maybe they are having a bad day. But what if an employee is leaking internal data to a competitor for payment? That’s a crime and they’ll get terminated as soon as it is established.

If someone is really worried they’ve offended God, they probably haven’t. In the context of Jesus’ ministry, the people who demonstrated a settled, hardened, determined commitment to opposing Jesus were the ones that needed Jesus’ warning - even if they ignored that, too!

What’s your take?

Hey Carson, thanks for your reply. I believe i worded that wrong. I meant to say denying salvation in Christ Jesus. Anyone denying God’s mercy through Christ Jesus can never be forgiven.

People say that blasphemy of Holy Spirit is exactly that. But the word says anyone who speaks against Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Most translations say speak against.

Even in Acts 6 they accused Stephen of “speaking against Moses and God”.

Anyone can deny the existence, deity and salvation of Jesus and on their death bed repent of their sin and will be saved. God will know if their genuine or not. But speaking agaisnt Holy Spirit, seeing what Hes done, the gifts and what He’s doing in the lives of men knowing or not knowing but rejecting Him is believe is the unforgivable sin.

Yea, I’m aligned with you, I think.

Sometimes people say just saying (or even thinking) the wrong words is an eternal death sentence with no appeals allowed.

That just doesn’t reflect the character of God.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is about the decided, stubborn, final rejection of his loving witness that Jesus died for our sins.
