Are Christians allowed to have hobbies?

A friend from church sent me this question a few days ago and it has been sticking with me.

I sent her my reply but I am interested in thoughts from the other faithful believers here:

“ Hello friend!

I’m curious, do you have any / would you be willing to share thoughts about the role and place (importance, lack thereof, as it pertains to worship) of play & leisure in a Christian’s life?”

What would theological and practical answers to this question be for busy people?

Hi @Michaela,

I thought about your interesting question while I was on a bike ride yesterday.

It seems to me that hobbies are part of being human. Anyone who can have a hobby does have a hobby.

It’s an innocent, positive way to relax and, often, to connect with others.

I think God loves us in our humanity - in every part of who we are, not just our souls.

The Garden of Eden was filled with creative beauty and diversity. Whatever we call exploring the world he made, some of that activity will be a “hobby”, and I think that’s wonderful.

The question isn’t whether or not we have hobbies, but perhaps the other issues around it. For instance, if the hobby involves going into debt, avoiding responsibilities, doing something immoral in itself, or keeps us from a lifestyle of living for God.

For instance, if I spend all my free time playing video games, this might isolate me from family and friends. But if I spend some time playing a video game to unwind after a long day, that seems like valuable rest.

I’m curious to hear what others think!

I agree with Carson! Hobbies are an important way for us to connect and also relax. As long as we keep a balance between responsibility, work and leisure, why would it be a problem for a Christian?
