In the spring and summer, I raise vegetables to eat. My planter boxes are full of vegetable plants right now. Boring plants. Tomatoes (3 varieties), bush beans, spaghetti squash, zucchini both green and yellow. Pretty boring, I warned you. What they all of these have in common: roots, leaves, stems and seeds. That is right seeds.
I think seeds are one of God’s cleverest creations. Seeds represent:
-
promise
-
potential
-
power
Promise
A promise is an assertions about an outcome.
A seed defines a future outcome. A seed promises more seed or perhaps more generally fruit. Under the right conditions a seed grows into a plant. Amazingly, one planted seed does not, usually, yield one more seed but rather multiple seeds and fruit. An apple seed is a promise of an apple tree and apples. Each apple contains more seed. More promises. God is so cool, He enabled one seed to multiply into more seeds.

Potential
Potential is a future not yet in existence. A seed has the potential to grow but at present that growth does not exist. The seed’s potential needs to be activated. Everybody knows the drill: plant, water, pull up the weeds and finally harvest. Without the activation process, there is no growth.

Power
Power is the ability to act or produce an effect.
The power of an apple seed is to make an apple tree and apples. Somehow God placed all the power needed to grow a plant and fruit. How much power do you think an apple seed contains?
Only the power of God creates life out of nothing or from the dust of the earth. God imparted to the apple seed part of His power to create life so that seed could create more life.
God has imparted that life making power to humankind. We should treat that life giving power with more respect and reverence. God expects us to use His empowering wisely and properly. What a gift and what a responsibility.
